There are four different utilities served by the City of Janesville and Janesville Utilities.

-- The Electric Utility was created when the power plant was constructed in 1939.  Since then, the power plant has provided electric service to the community.  The Utility is a member of the Central Municipal Power Agency/Services (CMPAS).  The power plant is capable of supplying electricity to the city during emergencies and down times from Xcel.

-- The Water Utility is responsible for providing clean water to the community.  The entire City is served by this utility.  In the summer of 2002, the Water Utility built a 300,000 gallon water tower in order to better provide this service.  The tower replaced a nearly 100-year old tower that was not large enough to provide an efficient water supply.

A packet of conservation tips and information can be obtained by contacting DNR Waters or the Minnesota Rural Water Association (MRWA). The American Water Works Association (AWWA) www.awwa.org or www.waterwiser.org also has excellent materials on water conservation that are available in a number of formats.

-- The Sewer Utility provides all sanitary sewer services to the city.  This includes the holding pond system maintained by the Public Works Department just south and west of city limits.  The Public Works Department is also responsible for maintaining four lift stations in the community.  For more information, please contact City Hall at 507-234-5110. The Public Works Director and public works workers are responsible for the sewer utility.

-- The Storm Sewer was created in 2020 to pay for the upgrades to our current drainage system.  This decision is purely a different funding mechanism as prior to 2020 these expenses were paid through the tax levy.  Rates are based off land use (type and size of lot; not property value).  The monthly fees help pay for maintenance of current system, ditch cleaning, flood reduction measurers, undersized pipes, breaks and debt service related to street improvements.

Both the electric and water utilities are governed by the Public Utilities Commission, while the sanitary and storm sewer is governed by the City Council.
